Dell Precision 5690: Unboxing and first impressions
Although this computer is quite capable, the Dell Precision 5690 comes in a rather humble package. Its minimalist approach reflects Dell’s commitment to sustainability from recycled materials. The product box contains the laptop, a 165W USB-C charger, a USB-C to USB-A adapter, and some protective paper to ensure that the computer arrives without scratches. From the moment I took off the cover, I loved the anodized aluminum chassis. The Dell Precision 5690 displays a stylish and professional design, constructed of Titan Gray anodized aluminum shell material. It’s heavy, but very portable for a workstation, weighing only 4.5 pounds. Just as importantly, it maintains a strong structure with minimal overall flex. This is not a flimsy device and is great for those who use their laptops every day. No need to worry about it breaking or getting damaged the first time you use it in the real world.
As someone who owns a personal MacBook Pro, I’m picky about my touchpad. I won’t tolerate anything less than excellence. The Precision 5690’s touchpad is great. It has a very wide shape and excellent tactile feedback and overall feel. Additionally, the keyboard is another thing that makes a laptop really great, since part of the reason people choose a laptop over a desktop is the ability to use it on the go. If the keyboard is great and built-in, then the laptop has one less thing to carry around, further adding to the bulk of a portable setup. Much like the touchpad, the keyboard is great on this computer. Granted, it’s not a Keychron custom mechanical keyboard, but it’s a great keyboard with backlit keys. It would be perfect if there was a small keyboard.
Dell Precision 5690: in use
I say it again. I’m used to working on a MacBook Pro day in and day out. Therefore, I often compare the laptops I test against it as a litmus test. The Dell Precision 5690 gives me the confidence that I can just run with the Precision 5690 and accomplish everything in my workflow with ease, even just relearning keyboard shortcuts. Jokes aside, this machine is incredible. Yes, there are more powerful computers. Yes, there are more portable laptops out there. Many laptops have “more” features, but the Dell Precision 5690 is a unique computer that hits the sweet spot of being an all-purpose device.
It performs very well in all categories. I’ve been using this laptop as my only laptop for several days and I’ve had zero hangups or hiccups while getting work done on this laptop, covering all the various types of tasks I do. I’ve been able to do administrative work, email, spreadsheets, web browsing, and project management, as well as photo and some video editing; I’ve been able to run programs, try some coding, I’ve played games, I’ve run remote desktop, I’ve Having run the benchmarks, I know that even when it comes to engineering and running large code bases, this can be a strong contender, delivering superior performance in CAD and CGI work.
Still, this laptop is portable enough that I don’t mind throwing it into my backpack and taking it wherever I work for the day. Even the battery is excellent for a machine like this. I keep a power bank and charger in my bag because that’s who I am, but I don’t feel like I need to refill every few hours; I can concentrate on long work sessions without having to worry about charging.
I enjoy using this display because of its 4K OLED display. Some pro laptops opt for 1080p displays, which is fine, but once I gave up on the iPhone 16 Pro’s beautiful display, I found myself wishing for a better screen. I don’t have this problem here. The Precision 5690’s beautiful screen makes viewing content feel just right and adds a little extra fun to editing photos and videos.
