John Mahama Secures Comeback Victory in Ghana’s Presidential Election

Former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama made a historic comeback, winning the presidential election after voters rejected the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s handling of the country’s economic crisis. The National People’s Party candidate, Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat on Sunday even as official vote counting was underway. Bawumia’s concession was based on preliminary results which showed Mahama received 56.3% of the vote to his 41.3%. Mahama, who led the West African country from 2012 to 2017, attempted to regain the leadership in 2016 and 2020. His victory on his third try reflects widespread frustration among Ghanaians over high inflation and the debt crisis under outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo. The term is eight years. Despite criticism of Mahama’s past governance, economic challenges, including currency devaluation, dominated the election as Mahama capitalized on public discontent. Ghana’s Electoral Commission is expected to announce official results on Tuesday.
