‘Person of Interest’ Arrested in Connection With UnitedHealth Exec Killing

Police arrested a 26-year-old man on firearms charges, describing him as a “strong” suspect in last week’s incident UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson killed, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Monday.
Tisch said an employee at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pa., called police when a customer came in with a photo similar to a photo released by police of the man who shot and killed an insurance executive.
Tisch said local authorities arrested the man, Luigi Mangione, on Monday after allegedly carrying a gun and silencer, as well as a fake New Jersey ID card. The ID card used by the shooter when he checked into the hotel was consistent.
Authorities said Monday afternoon that Mangione has not been charged in Thompson’s death. NYPD officers are traveling to Altoona to interview Mangioni, NYPD leaders said at a news conference Monday afternoon.
Authorities discovered a handwritten document that allegedly described Mangione’s “motivations and state of mind,” they said.
“We don’t believe there were any specific threats against the other individuals named in the document, but he appears to have had some malicious intent toward corporate America,” said NYPD Detective Joseph Kenney.
Thompson was shot in the back and leg on Dec. 4 as he walked to a Manhattan hotel that is home to the insurance company’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group.united nations institutes of health), is holding an investor meeting, the NYPD said. The gunman then fled, riding his bicycle into Central Park and out of the city, sparking a widespread manhunt, police said.
Thompson, 50, of Minnesota, started working for UnitedHealth Insurance Company in 2004 and became CEO of its insurance division in April 2021, according to the company.
Shares of Dow component UnitedHealth Group have fallen about 6% since the shooting. They were up about 2% in afternoon trading Monday.
