Downdetector® by Ookla® report highlights largest service outages in 2024, including Facebook, Crowdstrike and Microsoft
- Facebook’s March 5 outage was the world’s worst outage, with 11.1 million users reporting problems
- The July 19 Crowdstrike outage led to nearly 5 million users reporting issues with services that rely on it, including emergency services, airlines and ride-sharing apps
- The most significant outage in the Middle East and Africa was the Microsoft 365 outage that occurred on March 14 as part of a global event

This report is based on DownDetector® (https://apo-opa.co/3Zta2gR) data to analyze the biggest challenges related to service disruptions as reliance on digital services increases.

Key findings of the report include:
- Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp have been the most affected, affecting millions of users.
- Additionally, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and gaming services have been significantly impacted, highlighting the complexity of the Internet itself and the need for network-dependent services in this complex ecosystem.
- While the outage was global, critical regions such as Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and the United States experienced severe service disruptions.

Globally, Facebook’s March 5 outage was the most severe, with more than 11.1 million users worldwide reporting problems. The Facebook and Instagram outages had the greatest impact on the Asia-Pacific region, followed by widespread disruptions to Microsoft 365 and local services such as PayPay and Jio.
The European region was adversely affected by outages on Facebook and WhatsApp, as well as outages on German telecom providers 1&1 and Deutsche Telekom.
In Latin America, there was widespread disruption to Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, as well as outages to local services such as Bait and Nubank.
While the Microsoft 365 and Facebook outages had a significant impact on the Middle East and Africa region, local telecoms providers such as Telkom, MTN and Vodacom were also disrupted.
In the United States and Canada, Facebook, CrowdStrike, and AT&T experienced the most severe outages, followed by outages to various gaming services and ISPs. It’s worth noting that when Crowdstrike’s routine software update went awry on July 19, nearly 5 million DownDetectors were reported related to services using Crowdstrike or Microsoft, including emergency services, airlines, and ride-sharing apps.
