In typical fashion, the former England international found space on the left side of the box and looked set to blast the ball into the far corner until he spotted the supporting run of Bobby DeCordoba-Reed, who calmly Scored a goal from close range.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, a formidable striker in his own right who has scored numerous goals during spells at PSV, Manchester United, Real Madrid and the Netherlands, paid tribute to “top” Vardy.

“If you are on the goal sheet and make an assist, then you have to say that this result would not have been possible without him,” he said.

“Of course the performance of the whole team has put him in the right position. I enjoy the whole process in front of goal and that’s why we, as a team, put him in the position he did.”

“That’s why we need these players who can make a difference for us in positions. And then Jamie had awareness for the second goal because I think you know for the strikers, their eyes are focused on the goal. “
