Colin Montgomerie bid in Tour Championship fades as Peter Baker wins
Peter Baker defended his Mauritius MCB Tour title after defeating Simon Griffiths on the third hole of a sudden-death playoff at Constance Belle Mare Plage.
The Englishman birdied the final two holes of the regular championship, the final event of the Legends Tour season, to finish at 16 under and three shots ahead.
Then they birdied their first two extra holes, the par-5 18th, before Baker rose from a greenside bunker to win in four strokes.
Baker, who nearly quit the competition before the second round due to illness, retained the title he won last year on his way to the money title, but his in-game victory was not enough to retain the John Jacobs Trophy.
Instead, the title went to Brazilian Adilson da Silva, who defeated Baker last year. Griffiths took some consolation by winning the Barry Lane Rookie of the Year Award.
Earlier, Baker, the 1993 Ryder Cup player, was out in 35 on a birdie-bogey-birdie stretch midway through the front nine, then hit a shot on the 10th hole to move below. Par 14.
He followed that up with a six before finishing at 15-under on No. 17 and then four on the final par-5 when his winning putt for eagle missed left.
Griffith birdied holes 1, 3, 5 and 8 to shoot a 4-under 32 in the first half, hitting another shot at the par-5 13th and then on the 17th. Birdies on No. 18 and No. 18.
Colin Montgomerie, the 2017 Belle Mare Beach Legend Course winner, had no final day charges on the Indian Ocean island.
