Everton vs Liverpool: Merseyside derby postponed because of Storm Darragh
The Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool at Goodison Park has been postponed due to safety concerns due to bad weather caused by Storm Dara.
A yellow weather warning for strong winds has been issued for Merseyside on Saturday morning amid damaging weather across the UK.
The match was called off following a meeting between the two clubs with representatives from Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council.
Everton wrote in a statement: “While we realize this will be deeply disappointing for our supporters, the safety of fans, staff and players is of the utmost importance.”
Liverpool said the decision was taken “due to safety risks in the local area”.
The match, scheduled to kick off at 12:30 GMT, will be the last league derby between the two teams at Goodison before Everton moves to a new stadium in 2025.
Liverpool are seven points ahead of Chelsea and Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table, with the two teams facing Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham respectively on Sunday.
Sean Dyche’s Everton are 15th in the top flight, five points above the relegation zone.
Millions of people in parts of Wales and southwest England were told to stay at home during the storm to avoid danger.
Forecasters warned that winds would reach 90mph in some areas, while the Met Office issued the highest level red warning for west and south Wales, where tens of thousands of homes were without power.
