Ruben Amorim says Manchester United are “a massive club but not a massive team” says

Manchester United are “a huge club but not a huge team”, says new manager Ruben Amorim as he attempts to steer the club back to the top of the Premier League.

United have made progress since Erik ten Hag was sacked on October 28.

but Wednesday’s 2-0 loss to Arsenal Combined with results elsewhere, it means they have moved up just one place to 13th in the Premier League since Ten Hag’s exit.

Amorim, whose side host Nottingham Forest on Saturday (17:30 GMT), admitted his side finished second behind Arsenal and the game provided a reality check.

“It’s very clear,” he said. “We are a huge club but we are not a huge team. We know that so there is no problem in saying it.”

However, Amorim, who took over as United manager on November 11, said this does not mean the club should reset its goals.

He says he accepts the club’s storied history means the demands will always be high.

“We’re not one of the best teams in the league,” he said. “We have to express and think clearly about this.

“But (in) our past, our club was probably the best club in the league. So here we have a problem. We have to pay attention to the small details and then we can improve as a team.”

Amorim said early in his tenure that he expected his players to work hard.

United’s players have faced accusations of a lack of effort over the past few years, during a tumultuous period that has led to a series of managerial arrivals and departures.

The problem right now is the number of games they are playing. Amorim started 11 games in 37 days at Manchester United – his old club Sporting Lisbon had seven games in the same period – making it impossible for him to develop fitness.

Until that happens, supporters can expect another challenging season for their teams.

“If we want to win the Premier League we have to run like mad dogs,” Amorim said. “Even with the best starting lineup in the world, they’re not going to win anything if they don’t run.”
