Gary Shaw: Aston Villa legend died from head injury in fall
Aston Villa legend Gary Shaw died from serious head injuries suffered in a fall, an inquest heard.
The court heard the 63-year-old man had been out drinking with friends on September 5 and was found by a neighbor on the pavement outside his home at 01:20 GMT on September 6.
The former striker was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he died from his injuries on September 16.
Senior coroner Louise Hunt delivered a verdict of accidental death at Birmingham and Solihull Coroner’s Court.
Shaw came through the academy at his boyhood club and scored 79 goals in 213 games for Villa.
He was named Young Player of the Year by the Professional Footballers’ Association in 1981 and European Young Player of the Year in 1982.
The former England Under-21 forward has also played for Blackpool, Walsall, Kilmarnock and Shrewsbury Town.
Since retiring in 1992, he has worked as a statistical analyst and as a Villa Park club ambassador.
In October, people gathered at the stadium to pay their respects as his funeral procession passed Sutton Coldfield Crematorium.
