Celtic, Rangers & Well face SPFL charge over fan pyrotechnics
The SPFL said that while “it was fantastic to have more than 80,000 fans watching the League Cup semi-finals, a small number of fans carried out massive, violent protests ahead of Celtic’s games against Aberdeen and Motherwell.” Organized and illegal pyrotechnics displays “completely unacceptable” at the game against Rangers.
The governing body said in a statement: “This irresponsible behavior has caused significant inconvenience to the thousands of fans attending the game, as well as supporters watching around the world.
“The SPFL, the Scottish Football Association, Police Scotland and other organizations have made it clear that this use of pyrotechnics is unlawful and poses a clear danger and health and safety risk to other supporters, players and match staff.
“There have been a number of complaints from fans about these incidents and the SPFL and the Scottish Football Association have been in ongoing discussions with the clubs involved in the weeks since the semi-final.”
Celtic will face Rangers in the League Cup final at the National Stadium on December 15, where a sell-out is expected.
“The SPFL and the Scottish Football Association will continue to work closely with the finalists in preparation for this showcase event to highlight the importance of ensuring a safe and enjoyable matchday experience for all supporters in the context of the disciplinary proceedings currently underway . ”, SPFL added.
