Ghana’s 2024 Elections: Key Issues in Focus as Voters Head to Polls

As Ghana approaches its December 7 general election, key issues of concern to voters include economic hardship, public debt, unemployment and natural resource management. Like the rest of the world, the country has struggled with inflation, which has pushed up the price of staples like eggs and tomatoes and pushed many people into poverty. Compounding these economic woes, the West African country’s public debt has also soared, leading to a default on debt repayments in 2022. On top of this, unemployment is rising steadily, affecting 14.7% of the workforce. The problem is particularly acute among young people across the country, with approximately 30% of them unemployed. Voters will also focus on the country’s gold mining issues. Although Ghana remains Africa’s largest gold producer, concerns about the environmental damage caused by illegal mining remain. These issues will undoubtedly influence who voters vote for. Results are expected within three days.
