Boxing: Adam Azim to fight Sergey Lipinets on 1 February
Adam Azim will face former world champion Sergey Lipinet at the OVO Arena in Wembley on February 1 for the IBO light welterweight title.
The Briton is unbeaten in 12 fights with nine knockouts, but he will face another huge step up when he takes on the Kazakh fighter.
Lipinets, 35, is a former IBF champion who has lost just three of 22 fights in his career.
“This is an opportunity for me to show that I belong at world level and that I’m ready to face the best players,” the 22-year-old said.
“He’s a former world champion. He’s fought some of the biggest names. I have a lot of respect for him and what he’s accomplished in the sport, but now it’s my time.”
Lipinets’ most recent win was a points win against Englishman Robbie Davies in May.
Azim’s promoter Ben Shalom called the fight a “risky” choice for his fighter, while Lipinets praised the Slough native for taking the fight.
“I’m glad Adam accepted this fight,” said Lipinets, who has lost to world champions Mikey Garcia and Jalen Ennis.
“A lot of top fighters have refused to face me. I’ve never turned down a fight and this fight was make-or-break for me. Adam is young and strong but he doesn’t have the experience I have. I’ve seen that All this”.
