Remco Evenepoel: Double Olympic champion hospitalised after crash on training ride
Two-time Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel was taken to hospital following a cycling accident, his team Soudal-Quick Step said on Tuesday.
According to Belgian media reports, the 24-year-old crashed into the door of an open postal vehicle while training in Oettingen, Belgium.
“He is currently being evaluated in hospital and there are no updates,” a team spokesman told Reuters.
evernepoel, who Won gold medals in men’s road race and time trial at this year’s Olympics In Paris, he regained consciousness after the incident.
However, the frame of the 2022 Vuelta a España winner’s golden bike has been completely overhauled.
“Remko has pain in his shoulder and hand. Our doctors are treating it,” Soudal-Quick Step manager Patrick Lefevere told Belgian state-funded sports website Sporza.
“In that incident, his bike was broken in half, but it was better to break his bike in half than break his arm in half.”
Even Poole’s father Patrick told Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad in an update: “He has sent us a message so we hope everything goes well.”
