Why is Biden Visiting Africa Now, and why Angola? – Africa.com
US President Joe Biden will visit Angola in the weeks before leaving office. It is his first bilateral trip to Africa and many analysts say it is Biden’s last desperate attempt to fulfill a long-ago promise and counter China’s growing influence on the continent. Biden’s visit to Luanda will focus on the US-backed $800 million rail project in the Lobito Corridor. The channel is a strategic trade route linking the resource-rich Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Zambia to Angola, which hosts the Atlantic port of Lobito.
