Terry Griffiths: Former world snooker champion dies aged 77

After ending his professional playing career in 1997, Griffiths became a distinguished coach, inspiring the likes of Stephen Hendry, Mark Williams and Mark Allen, and regularly commentating on snooker for BBC Sport sports.

Three-time world champion and Welshman Williams was one of the first to pay tribute on social media, calling him a “mentor, coach, friend, legend”.

Northern Ireland’s Allen added: “What a legend, he helped shape my career and life on and off the field. I am absolutely heartbroken. He was more than just a coach, he was family to me.”

Journalist Peter Jackson posted: “Wales has lost one of its finest ambassadors. Terry Griffiths, a postman in his hometown of Llanelli, emulated Alex ‘Hurricane’ Higgins, Became the second qualifier to win the Snooker World Championship in 1979.
