Manchester City: Pep Guardiola asks for chance to turn form around

Guardiola says he has asked Manchester City’s hierarchy for a chance to turn the club around but will leave if this is not done.

Guardiola is experiencing the worst form of his coaching career after Manchester City lost five games in a row in all competitions. Drawn with Feyenoord after leading by three goals Champions League midweek.

His cause has not been helped by injuries to a number of key players, including Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, who will miss the remainder of the season.

Guardiola has won 18 trophies since moving to the Etihad Stadium in 2016, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League in seven years.

But the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss, who recently signed a new two-year contract, said it was no guarantee he would stay on if performance failed to improve.

“If I felt like I was a problem, I wouldn’t want to be in this place,” he said. “I don’t want to stay here just because the contract is there.

“My president knows that. I said to him, ‘Give me a chance to try to come back,’ especially when everyone is coming back (from injury) and see what happens.

“Then, if I can’t do it, we have to change because, of course, nine years have passed.

“More than ever, I’m asking my leadership to give me a chance.

“Is it easy for me now? No. I feel like I have work to do and I want to do it.”
