One of South Africa’s opposition parties, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has filed a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court, demanding the restart of impeachment proceedings against President Cyril Ramaphosa over the Farmgate scandal. The dispute involves the alleged theft of millions of dollars hidden in furniture at Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala game farm, according to a former intelligence official. While an independent panel found evidence of potential wrongdoing, Ramaphosa’s African National Congress (ANC), which held a majority in parliament at the time, dismissed the report and blocked further investigation. The EFF claimed the action was illegal and failed to hold the president accountable. Ramaphosa has not been charged criminally over the incident, but he has always denied wrongdoing. He joined the ANC in arguing that the report lacked reliable evidence to support its findings and relied on hearsay. The Constitutional Court began hearing the case on Tuesday.
