Forty years after its release, Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” continues to spark debate over its depiction of Africa and its legacy in global philanthropy. The song, written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure in 1984 to address famine in Ethiopia, raised millions of dollars and inspired other celebrity campaigns. However, critics argue that its lyrics and imagery perpetuate stereotypes, depicting Africa as helpless and dependent. Dawit Giorgis, the Ethiopian official who prompted the BBC’s original report, acknowledged the life-saving effect of Band-Aids but found the narrative insulting, pointing to Ethiopia’s deep Christian roots. Contemporary African artists such as Fuse ODG echo these concerns, calling for modern narratives that respect Africa’s diversity and dignity. While supporters of Band-Aid defend its mission, a shift in humanitarian approaches now emphasizes moral storytelling and collaboration with affected communities, urging a move beyond outdated “savior narratives.”
