Wafcon 2024 groups: Hosts Morocco drawn with Zambia, Nigeria get Tunisia and South Africa land Ghana
Morocco also hosted Wafcon 2022, finishing runners-up, and former international Fatiha Laassiri believes the home support will provide a “real advantage” next year.
But with Senegal last eliminated on penalties in the quarter-finals and DR Congo returning to the final for the first time since 2012, former Nigeria goalkeeper Rachael Ayegba believes Group A is the best option. Worth paying attention to.
“Senegal are playing well in 2022 and I wouldn’t be surprised if they play better,” she told BBC Sport Africa.
“The DRC is ready to show what they can bring. I think Morocco and Zambia will have the upper hand, but Senegal and the DRC could disrupt the situation.”
Ayegba also warned Nigeria against complacency after Botswana and Tunisia reached the quarter-finals two years ago.
“Tunisia, Algeria and Botswana will fight Nigeria,” she added. “Everything is possible in Group B.”
Meanwhile, South Africa goalkeeper Andile Dlamini says Banyana Banyana “will not be cocky” as they prepare to Defend their title.
The 32-year-old added: “At the 2023 Women’s World Cup, the top three countries (Nigeria, South Africa and Morocco) are in the last 16 and anyone has the ability to win this tournament.”
“It depends on who’s doing well on a given day.”
