Santander announced it would close 95 branches in the UK, putting 750 jobs at risk.

The high street bank said its customers are increasingly shifting to the online banking industry, with the goal of closing nearly a quarter of its branches starting in June.

As part of the change, Santander will also reduce hours of 36 branches and remove the front counter from 18 people.

This is the latest bank announced its branches and with Lloyds announced 136 closures in January.

The closed side will compare the branches in Santander with 444 branches.

It said the areas that lost branches will be covered by 95 “community bankers” who will visit local communities weekly at facilities such as libraries.

Santander said the changes were due to “the rapid movement of customers’ choice of banking digitally.”

Since 2019, it has added less than two-thirds of digital transactions, and branches are similar.

A Santander spokesman said: “Closening branches is always a very difficult decision and we spend a lot of time evaluating when and when we do this and how to minimize its impact on our customers.”

The bank said that if the proposal continues after consultation with the union, about 750 employees are at risk of layoffs.

Which consumer group? Santander’s decision to shut down nearly a quarter of its network “will have a blow to many customers.”

“For an important minority, it’s still very important to use cash to pay for daily necessities and track their spending,” said Jenny Ross, the group’s currency editor.

Plans to protect services such as bank hubs are “a good start to the gap left by closing physical branches,” she said, but said it should be rolled out “if consumers feel their own interests, they will be rolled out faster.”

Ms Ross added that the government “must keep the bank’s feet on the fire” to ensure that the commitment to establish 350 bank hubs by 2029 is met and ready to increase that total if necessary.
