Sir Gareth Southgate delivers this year’s Dimbleby speech

Sir Gareth Southgate said he was worried that young people spend too much time playing, gambling and watching pornography — they need better role models, not online influencers.

The former England men’s football manager talked about his own experience of the crucial fine for the 96 euro missing in Europe, and during his extensive speech to the BBC’s annual Richard Dimbleby speech, he said he didn’t let him define him.

“The pain today still bothers me, I think it will always be,” he said.

He said the UK needs to do more to encourage young people, especially young people – to make the right choices in life and not worry about failure.

Sir Gareth didn’t turn to teachers, sports coaches or youth group leaders, and he was worried that many young people were looking for directions online. There, he said, they are looking for a new role model that often has no maximum benefit.

“These are cold, manipulated and toxic influencers whose only motivation is for their own benefit,” he said.

“They are willing to deceive young people into believing that success is measured by money or rulers, a force that means that emotions will never be shown and that the world, including women, has objections to them.”

Sir Gareth talked about missing a key fine in the 1996 euro semi-finals when England lost to Germany in 1996.

“There is no doubt that the lack of punishment is a watershed, which makes me stronger, a better person,” Sir Gareth said in his speech. “It forces me to dig deeper and reveals inner beliefs and resilience that I have never known.”

He compared Eric Dier’s successful penalty against Colombia in 2018, when he was manager with Sir Gareth – England won the World Cup free throw for the first time.

During the 22 years during this period, he said that the mentality of English players has changed.

“In 1996, I walked 30 yards to the free throw point, and I believe I would miss it,” he said. “In 2018, Eric went to the free throw with a 30 yards and thought he would score.”

During his career as a defender and midfielder at Sir Gareth, he played for Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough, and was in England between 1995 and 2004.

He resigned as manager in JulyTwo days after England lost to Spain by euro.

Sir Gareth is considered a December New Year honor for revitalizing England.

He is the latest news from academics, business leaders and other notable figures to deliver a speech by Richard Dimbleby, which has been held in most years since 1972 in honor of the broadcaster.

Previous spokespersons included King Charles III, when he was Prince of Wales, tech entrepreneur and philanthropist Bill Gates and then managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“Too many young people are isolated”

Sir Gareth’s speech focused on the importance of faith and resilience to young people, and he enumerated three things to build these: identity, connection and culture.

He mentioned a report, The Social Justice Center released earlier this monthThis says boys and young people are in a “crisis” and people without education, employment or training are “amazing”.

“Too many young people are quarantined,” Sir Gareth said in his speech. “Too many people are uncomfortable with the openness of their friends or family. Many people don’t have mentors – teachers, coaches, bosses – they understand how best to drive them to grow. So when they struggle, it is inevitable that young people try to deal with whatever situation they find themselves.”

“Young people end up quitting and are reluctant to speak or express their emotions,” he added. “They spend more time online looking for directions and getting stuck in unhealthy alternatives like gaming, gambling and porn.”

He also said that young people do not have enough opportunities to fail and learn from mistakes.

“I think if we make it too easy for young boys to live now, then when they grow up to be young people, we will inevitably make life harder,” he said. “Too many young people are at risk of being afraid of failure precisely because they have very few opportunities to experience and overcome it. They don’t try, not try to fail.”

The former footballer also reflects his career teaching him about faith and resilience.

“If I learn anything from my life in football, it’s that success is much more than the final result,” he said. “Real success is when you respond in the toughest moments.”
