Woman dies after being hit by van on the Strand
PA MediaA woman died after hitting many pedestrians in the streets of central London.
Metropolitan police said a woman in her 20s was pronounced dead at the scene, while two other pedestrians were injured.
The driver of a 26-year-old man’s van was arrested at the scene for suspected driving and drug driving.
Police said the incident occurred at a house near King’s College London and Somerset, near 11:40 GMT, and had nothing to do with the horror.
PA MediaTwo pedestrians were taken to the hospital, one could be injured in life threatening and the other was slightly injured.
The troops said the arrested persons were still in custody and inquiries were underway.
Miles Damone, a student at King’s College in London, told the BBC that he saw a van “hit into a fence”.
He said: “The van comes from one of a pathways in the Indian Embassy and then at this point – I can’t see how or when it hits the people.
“I just saw it coming from there, turning, and hitting the fence. It hit the side of the church.”
The chain travels west from Surrey Street to the Waterloo Bridge is closed. It is understood that traffic to the east can still use this road.
The London Fire Brigade said two fire trucks and about 10 firefighters from Dowgate and Lambeth Fire States were called to the scene to assist in London ambulance services.
A spokesman for King’s College London said they were aware of the incident and were linked to emergency services.
