Women’s elite sport to exceed £1.8bn in revenue in 2025, says Deloitte report

Global revenue generated by elite women’s sports is expected to exceed £1.8 billion in 2025, and financial expert Deloitte points out that “the business appeal of women’s sports and their athletes has never been more high”.

Revenues exceeded £1 billion for the first time last year, and the latest Deloitte report predicts at least £18.8 billion on match days, broadcast and commercial revenues in 2025.

Basketball (44%) is expected to surpass football (35%), the highest revenue-generating sport.

Business revenue includes sponsorship, partnerships, sales and pre-season travel revenue, which is expected to represent the largest revenue share in women’s sports (54%), broadcast revenue contributes 25%, and match-day revenue provides the remaining 21% of revenue.

Knowledge and insights from the Deloitte Sports Business Group Jennifer Haskel said: “Despite limited resources, growth in women’s sports is still exceeding expectations as growth in various competitions, leagues, clubs and athletes is still producing considerable returns.

“The women’s movement is rewriting scripts and challenging traditional norms to redefine the future of the industry.”

Haskel stressed the importance of major matches, such as the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 (the World Cup) will be held in the UK and has sold record tickets and the Women’s European Cup 2025 and has increased revenue growth.

She added: “Major events are increasing the visibility and participation of many sports and geography, but at these important moments, deliberate action is needed to promote the domestic success of the league and clubs.

“It’s no longer enough to just hold an event – organizers must be bold and consider new ways to attract fans and push for the champions to engage after they are crowned.

“As the industry continues to debut on the global stage, the business appeal of women’s sports and their athletes has never been more high.

“Enhanced strategic investment is more important than ever to promote a professional global landscape and create an attractive industry for future generations. It is crucial for women’s sports organizations to implement the right structure, develop clear investment plans and define their place in a rapidly growing global industry.”
