Manchester City women: Uefa open investigation after Khadija Shaw hit by object
UEFA has launched an investigation after Manchester City striker Khadija Shaw was hit by an object during their Women’s Champions League win over Hammarby.
Shaw scored two goals at half-time Manchester City won 2-1 They secured their place in the quarter-finals with two group games remaining at Stockholm Arena on Thursday.
The Jamaica forward celebrated enthusiastically in front of the home fans after the first goal, only to be booked and replays showed an object appeared to be thrown from the stands into her path.
UEFA said in a statement: “Hamaby FC initiated proceedings for throwing an object (Article 16(2)(b) of the Disciplinary Regulations).”
The statement added: “Manchester City player Khadija Shaw received a yellow card for unsporting conduct after scoring a goal.”
After the game, Manchester City captain Alex Greenwood slammed match broadcaster DAZN for failing to mention the incident in a social media post.
Post on X, external Shaw said he “provoked” the home fans and was “bludgeoned” by them.
Greenwood replied: “Correction. Went to Stockholm, scored a big goal. Celebrated her goal. Someone threw something at her.”
“We are aware of media reports that objects were thrown from the stands during the match between Hammarby IF and Manchester City,” the Swedish team told BBC Sport.
“We have no further information on this case and will await a formal investigation by UEFA.”
