24 of the Best Board Games to Give in 2025
Agricola is one of the best board games ever, and it is also one of the best examples of worker placement mechanisms. The concept is simple: as the season progresses, each player uses their farmers and wives (both called “workers”) to complete various actions, such as collecting wood or vegetables, upgrading their farmhouses, building pens, buying animals, having kids, and more. Over time, players have children (more workers use) and expand the farm. But the problem in all of these processes is scarcity: Agricola is a demanding game. Even if no opponent stops you from getting rid of certain movements, it often feels like you’re just scratching – eating enough food to support your family in the winter. Players usually score few (or negatively) points in the first game, but it feels incredible when you start learning.
