At least 8 dead in Kansas dust storm as 55 vehicles crash during interstate pile-up

At least eight people died after at least 55 cars were involved in a crash due to a sandstorm in Kansas.

On Friday, at 3:22 p.m. local time, strong winds moved from Colorado to northwestern Kansas, causing severe dust storms, which resulted in slow traffic speeds due to near zero visibility, resulting in multiple crashes in the I-70.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said Saturday that eight people died, reportedly reported.

“My thoughts are with those affected by this tragic incident,” Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly said in a statement. “I encourage all motorists to stay alert as further weather events will continue today. Thanks to the first responders and emergency responders for their quick response and continue to work to investigate and clear this collapse.”

The I-70 remains closed as staff continue to investigate and clean up the crash.
