Cabinet Health Minister Deborah Mulongo Barasa marks a batch of essential HIV goods (MEDS) in his mission to essential medicines and supplies (MEDS) today to ensure uninterrupted care for people in HIV (PLHIV).

Despite the global funding challenge, Dr. Barraza reiterated the ministry’s commitment to maintaining the HIV response during the event. Accompanied by Mary Muthoni, Chief Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, and CEO of Kemsa, she stressed the government’s firm commitment to ensuring patients continue to access life-saving HIV treatment and testing merchandise.

Kenya has made great progress in the fight against HIV, achieving the goal of 98:98:94 towards the development of the United Nations AIDS 95:95:95. Coordination between Kemsa, Meds, the Ministry of Health and County Government plays a key role in maintaining a strong HIV care supply chain.

Labeled cargoes include: antiretroviral (ARV) drugs such as Tenofovir/Lamivudine/Dolutegravir (TLD) and pediatric preparations; HIV testing suite supports the country’s 3 test algorithm; early infant diagnosis (EID) and viral load testing reagents for timely diagnostic and therapeutic monitoring, and male condoms to support HIV prevention efforts.

Dr. Barasa highlighted the ministry’s commitment to strengthening local pharmaceutical manufacturing, integrating HIV care into universal health coverage, and leveraging digital platforms to increase the efficiency of commodity distribution. This milestone highlights Kenya’s commitment to a HIV-free future, ensuring that patients are not forgotten.

Labeled consumables will be distributed nationwide to ensure access to basic treatment and care.
