Julian Alvarez penalty miss: Uefa to discuss laws with IFAB after Atletico’s Champions League exit
UEFA said it will discuss rules about the fine with the game’s legislators in the UEFA Champions League exit at Atletico Madrid.
Atletico’s penalty shootout in the last 16 draws with rival Real Madrid, Alvarez slipped and then crossed Thibaut Courtois.
However, after the review by the Video Assistant (VAR) referee, the Argentine striker was left out as he was thought to have touched the ball twice, while Real Madrid made two touches after winning the gunfight 4-2.
On Thursday, European football ruling body UEFA said that despite the correct application of the law in Madrid, it will review the current rules with the International Football Association Committee (IFAB) and the world governing body FIFA, which involves double touching “apparently unintentional”.
Article 14.1 of the IFAB law revolves around punishment: “The kicker must play again before touching another player.”
“Under the current rules (Game Law, Law No. 14.1), VAR must say the referee stated that the target should be prohibited,” the UEFA said in a statement.
In all games, the Athletic lost all six free throws.
