Uganda Mobilizes Troops to South Sudan Amid Rising Political Tensions

According to Uganda’s military chief Muhoozi Kaiinerugaba, Kampala deployed troops to Juba, the capital of South Sudan, to help secure the city, due to increased tensions between President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar. Kainerugaba announced that any move against Kiel would be regarded as a “declaration of war” against Uganda. Concerns are growing over the collapse of South Sudan’s fragile 2018 peace agreement due to the recently arrested allies of Machar. Kiir accused Machar of plotting a coup Machar denied. The South Sudanese government has not commented on the deployment, but the situation remains volatile.
