Algeria to Import 1 Million Sheep to Curb Eid al-Adha Price Surge

Faced with record drought and rising food prices, Algeria plans to import 1 million sheep before Eid. The move is designed to stabilize costs and ensure the availability of annual ritual sacrifices. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune directed the Ministry of Agriculture and Trade to secure international resources, thus expanding previous government interventions to control food prices. Last year, the price of Eid sheep soared to $1,496, a minimum wage time, which has led many to abandon the tradition. The move reflects regional efforts, with Morocco King Mohammed VI recently advised low-income citizens to give up their sacrifices. While the initiative may ease inflation-driven frustration, critics see it as part of a broader strategy to quell public discontent amid Algeria’s political repression.
