PlayStation Reportedly Is Playing With AI-Driven Characters

Sony appears to be developing AI technology that can enable its PlayStation game characters to interact more directly with players.

As The edge was discovered on Monday, a video narrated by Sharwin Raghoebardajal, director of software engineering at Sony Interactive Entertainment, which contains an AI-Elecan version of Aloy from the company’s “Horizon Horizon Game” series.

In videos that have been removed from YouTube, characters can talk to the player, including OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Llama 3, as well as some of Sony’s own speeches and facial animation techniques.

The Verge said it got the wind of the video from an anonymous prompter. After the story was published, the copyright claims of Muso, a content protection company that worked with Sony, made the video unavailable.

According to The Verge, the video shows prototype stage technology on PC, but can be applied to Sony’s PlayStation 5 console.

Like many other tech companies, Sony has been developing different types of AI agents and technologies.

On the Sony AI websiteThe company said it “revolutionizes human interaction through human interactions in games and virtual worlds through cutting-edge AI agents that will provide new possibilities and deeper connections to game developers and players.”

Sony did not immediately respond to messages about CNET about leaked video reports.

While companies from NVIDIA, Apple, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and Meta are competing to develop new AI models and technologies, Sony’s efforts appear to be to enhance gameplay and provide gamers with players who interact with characters or players who gain guidance on navigating their experience.

Previous reports are based primarily on Sony patent documents, suggesting that the company is developing AI assistants to provide guidance or assistance to gamers. These efforts seem to be similar to those of Nvidia and Microsoft With Inworld AI.

AI-driven roles can present challenges

Nic Young, CEO and Co-founder ohThe platform works on AI infrastructure and other platforms based on identity content, and he says Sony’s move can improve the playability of its games, especially open-world games.

“We probably all played Skyrim’s main storyline six times, and despite always new quirks and discoveries, character conversations that will eventually be repeated when novelty are novel,” Young told CNET. “Imagine if these characters could have new conversations every time, fully aware and react to the player’s specific actions and storylines – this would make unpredictability and excitement endless.”

AI-driven characters can make certain games feel more personalized and destroy the molds of script dialogue trees, making the storyline more unique, Young said.

“AI is inherently unpredictable – its creativity and novelty stems directly from its nondeterminism, which makes the control challenge,” he said. “The right balance between boredom, controllability and creativity, but for major companies like Sony, unpredictable is especially important.”

The challenge, he said, will be to make guardrails around this unpredictable performance keep players safe and draw enough computing resources to make AI compelling.

However, AI can change the nature of these types of games.

“The magic in the game comes from players with truly unique, immersive, personalized experiences,” Young said. “Transforming from a pre-recorded NPC to a truly smart character is like a leap from reading to exploring an open world game, again again.”
