Oscar Piastri signs new long-term contract with McLaren
Oscar Piastri has signed a new contract with McLaren, which the team says will keep him in touch with them “long-term.”
The 23-year-old Australian won the world championship last year in the second season of Formula 1, winning two Grand Prixes in the World Championships but has signed until the end of 2026.
Piastri’s results and teammate Lando Norris’ second place in the driver’s championship ensured McLaren Builders Title Last year was the first time since 1998.
“Not only is Oscar a very talented driver, but his work ethics and cultural fit in the team makes it easy for him to extend his time in papaya.
“We have the best driver lineup on the grid and over the past two seasons, we’ve seen how much Oscar team has assets.
“He was absolutely basic in comparison to the legacy of the 2024 builder championship last season, so we’re all excited to see what we can do as we continue to fight for the World Championships.”
“It was a great feeling to know that I was part of McLaren’s long-term vision. The team had faith in me when we signed in 2022, and over the past two seasons, we’ve experienced helping to bring McLaren back to the highest level in the sport.
“There are a lot of talented and special people at McLaren who helped me become Formula One champion early in my career. So I’m honored to continue to represent this legendary team for many years to come.”
McLaren’s statement deliberately vagues the exact length of his contract, but the language in the release combined with his previous contracts suggests he is now committed to the team until at least the end of 2028.
Norris signed a new contract last year and the team said that the team will impose him on McLaren until at least the end of 2026.
Brown, Team Principal Andrea Stella and Director of Aerodynamics, Peter Prodromou Recently signed a longer contract with McLaren.
Strat said Piastri’s new contract is “a symbol of our belief in and believe that he is a driver.”
The Italian added: “He continues to prove his talent, determination and work ethics are the driver and his contributions as a team and culture as a person.
“With Lando, we need something that is locked in for a long time to keep moving forward.”
