Uganda: Regional parliamentary forum pushing for peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
The delegation of international parliamentarians at the Great Lakes International Conference (PF-ICGLR) is part of Uganda, part of the fact-finding peace and security mission of the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Chaired by the delegation of the President of the Zambian National Assembly and PF-ICGLR, RT. honor. Nelly Mutti Butete will also meet with President Yoweri Museveni.
On Monday, March 10, 2025, welcoming the delegation to Uganda, the Speaker, Anita, praised their commitment to regional peace and reaffirmed Uganda’s support for the African-led African countries’ challenge solutions.
“As Africans, we have always agreed that it is only local to resolve Africa. The pursuit you are doing, moving from one country to another, meeting the head of state to find the best way to achieve peace is a very good initiative and I appreciate you and your team,” she said.
In reaffirming Uganda’s commitment to regional peace, it was pointed out that peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is crucial to stability in the Great Lakes region.
“Solving the problem is why they are here. We want to see how we can create the best peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and only achieve peace with our heads of state and our nation as Africans. It starts with us,” she said.
It also highlighted the active participation of Uganda in the forum, noting that the country remains the latest in its financial obligations.
Butete outlines the goals of the visit, highlighting the importance of regional leadership in conflict resolution.
“This is the fourth phase of issues related to peace and security in the Democratic Republic of the Eastern Congo,” she said, adding, ‘Without peace we will not be able to interact and even regional integration cannot prosper. Peace is a pioneer in development.
She stressed the need for African countries to be responsible for their security issues and to avoid external intervention where possible.
“We don’t want to invite strangers to intervene in our affairs when our responsible leaders present can take responsibility and guide citizens to ensure peace and stability in the region,” Butete said.
The results of the delegation’s investigation will be submitted to the PF-ICGLR plenary in April and then upgraded to a higher level for further discussion.
Butete summed up her tenure as chairman of the forum, highlighting the importance of tangible progress before leadership transitions to Angola.
