Commonwealth Games: Dame Laura Kenny ‘worry’ over future of Games
Mrs. Laura Kenny said the future of the Commonwealth Games felt “worrying” but hopes next year’s event in Glasgow proves it remains “workable”.
Glasgow stepped in with the Australian Victoria withdrawing a scaled version of the 2026 Olympic Games last year due to rising costs.

“I hope everything they put in will prove that this is still a key event.”
Bids in Kuala Lumpur, Cardiff, Calgary, Edmonton and Adelaide were withdrawn from the 2026 match due to concerns about costs until Victoria landed in 2023.
Five-time Olympic racing cycling champion Kenny told Radio 4 Today: “I am very grateful to Glasgow for raising his hands and saying they will have it.
“It’s some sports because it’s a slim version. Initially, I was a little nervous when there was no console and I was a little worried that this might not be a thing anymore.
“Commonwealth Games is now looking at its structure, how to improve it, how to make it easier to access, make it bigger and better to move the host forward.
“I really hope it’s going well, like before Glasgow (2014), they can still see it still work and the sporting events that everyone loves are very good.”
The Commonwealth Games were first staged in 1930 and were then known as the British Empire Games.
The 2030 Olympic Games will be held in Hamilton, Canada.
