BetMcLean Cup: Reds boss Jim Magilton praises ‘master finisher’ Joe Gormley

Magilton was pleased with his team’s overall show and admitted that Jonny Russell missed a glorious opportunity after goalkeeper Lewis Ridd’s mistake, and they won their luck at the end of the game.

“We had to show real courage, the goalkeeper made some saves, we knew we had to bear the pressure, and the quality moment won our trophy”.

“Lewis’ first big day at the club was very good, and he made a mistake in his dying seconds of the game, maybe the green friction was with us.”

With his current Batem Salary Cup and a chance to retain the Irish Cup in the semi-final against the Ards, Magilton hopes his side will continue and end a season.

“We are fanatical about success, and the more you get, the more you want.

“We had a tough month; we had seven games and so far we’ve won three-thirds, and it’s about building momentum.”

Magleton added that Cliftonville remembers guard Michael Newberry who died earlier this season, and the celebrations were frustrating.

The Reds showed his shirt as a trophy lift after hanging in the locker room before the game.

“As he would have liked, defending his survival, but more importantly, he would have liked the celebration,” Margarton said.

“There is no day when I don’t think about his place, he is very important in our minds, his father will text me, and I believe his mother and brother are here today.”
