Despite investments in education, youth unemployment remains a major challenge for Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) due to mismatch between labor skills and market demand. A new UK parliamentary report highlights the potential of skills taxation, which is used to transform employers in technology and vocational education. Although successfully implemented in South Africa, Botswana and Mauritius, skills taxes remain underutilized or mismanaged in most of the SSA. Policymakers must rethink how these funds can be used to combine training with labor market demand, increase employment and drive economic growth.
