Why Ethiopia Shakes: Geologist Explains Quakes and Volcano Threats

A series of earthquakes in the distant areas of Ethiopia have sparked attention to potential volcanic eruptions and replaced thousands of people. This geologically active area is located in the Great Rift Valley, a fault line formed millions of years ago, gradually breaking the continent apart. Scientists warn that the movement of molten rocks beneath the earth’s crust is driving tremors, with more than 200 earthquakes recorded in the past five months, the strongest magnitude 6.0 on the Richter scale. Although no eruption has occurred, experts predict three possible outcomes: rock solidification, lateral magma motion or volcanic eruption. To mitigate risks, scientists highlight the need for advanced monitoring systems and better communication strategies for affected communities.
