Middlesbrough’s Ben Doak to miss Scotland’s Nations League play-off after surgery

Scottish winger Ben Doak will almost certainly miss this month’s National League playoff double heads against Greece, having surgery after a thigh injury.

Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick said: “It’s hard to say” whether the 19-year-old Liverpool will be able to play for the championship team again this season.

Doak played his last game in the last of 24 matches against Promotion Hope on January 25 and seemed to be outside of recovery before the surgery.

“He went back to Liverpool for some recovery,” Carrick said. “We’re going to see where he is going and how long it will take him.

“He was recovering and then doing it. It was unfortunate for us and myself, but it was part of the game. He would be stronger.”

Doak has been impressed with Scotland since he was handed the first of six blocks in September.

On March 20, Steve Clarke visited the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus and took the second round three days later at Hampden Park.

Scotland needs to win to stay in the A League after finishing third in their match.

The Greeks are eligible for the playoffs after finishing second after a goal difference with England.
