Nigeria’s Power Generation Surges 30% Amid Grid Overhaul

Nigeria’s electricity generation jumped 30% this week before upgrading to the country’s aging power infrastructure, close to a peak of 6,000 megawatts (MW). Despite the ability to generate 13,000 megawatts, the supply of outdated transmission lines is long, forcing consumers to rely on expensive generators. Sule Abdulaziz, head of Nigeria Transmission Corporation (TCN), said the country has commissioned 66 new transformers to expand substations and enhance transmission lines, resulting in growth. The Grid Modernization Project, led by Siemens, promotes overhaul and aims to provide 7,000 MW by 2021. However, logistical and financial obstacles delayed the achievement of these goals. With funding obtained by AFDB and other sources, the project is moving forward with plans to exceed 10,000 MW by 2026.
