Jake Wightman: Father to stop coaching former world champion
Jake Wightman will no longer be directed by his father, Geoff, the former 1500m world champion announced.
When Jake won gold on the track in 2022, the father-son duo shared the experience together, while Geoff commented on the game as a stadium announcer.
Scotsman Jake has been injured for a long time since then, including the lack of the 2023 season and the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“This is something we both need to take different ways in my career, both physically and mentally,” Jake Wightman said on Instagram.
“By doing this, we make sure there is still a lot to do in the future, not as coaches/athletes, but as fathers/sons, away from the intensity and pressure of training and racing.
“The coaches didn’t get the gratitude they deserved at the best of time, but when they started driving to race nationally and flying the world together as kids, it was all about helping me realize my dream.
“So that’s thank you for your dad’s selfless time and money for years.
“I hope we both can look back on our achievements and feel great pride.”
