Australia’s Steve Smith retires from ODI cricket after Champions Trophy exit
Steve Smith has retired from one-day international cricket after he stepped down from the championship trophy in the Australian semifinals.
The 35-year-old made 170 appearances for Australia in his 50 careers, hitting 12 centuries and winning the ODI World Cup in 2015 and 2023.
Smith was absent from the ODI appearance on Tuesday on the side of Pat Cummins’ absence when Australia suffered Lose four goals to India Dubai in the championship trophy.
The former Sussex batsman will continue to choose the T20 for his country.
“There are a lot of great times and great memories. Winning two World Cups, it was a great highlight and sharing the journey with many amazing teammates,” said Smith, a man in Australia ODI ODI of the Year.
“Now is a great opportunity for people to start preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup, so it feels like the right time.
“Test cricket is still a top priority, and I’m really looking forward to the World Test Championship Final, West Indies in the winter, and then at home in England. I feel like I’m still going to contribute a lot at that stage.”
