Sanitech And Sensatec Partner To Revolutionise Environmental Remediation In South Africa And Namibia

SaniTech, a leading portable sanitation and sanitation solutions company in South Africa, and Sensatec, a leading entity for environmental solutions and services contaminated soil and groundwater, recently announced a strategic partnership that will accelerate growth and strengthen its presence in the South African and Namibian markets.

The partnership addresses the need for environmentally responsible solutions to combat soil and groundwater pollution, a major challenge facing industries across the region.

Sustainable future remedies
The partnership will prioritize in situ repair and treatment, a proven and cost-effective approach to restore contaminated soil and groundwater. Unlike traditional methods involving excavation and off-site treatment, in-situ remedies involve direct application of safety reagents to contaminated areas, minimizing damage and reducing environmental impacts. This innovative approach can significantly accelerate the repair schedule, and in many cases it can even reduce them from decades or even months.

“By leveraging cutting-edge technology and experienced teams, we can greatly speed up the remediation timeline,” explains Harry Ylikangas, CEO of Sensatec Africa. “In-situ remediation, combined with our advanced solutions, can effectively address pollution, thereby reducing costs and environmental impacts.”

Advanced technology and local expertise
Sensatec will introduce an advanced set of technologies and methods to the African market to speed up the completion of remedial projects. These technologies are usually cheaper and more sustainable than traditional technologies, including

  • Bioremediation can use the power of microorganisms to degrade pollutants, thereby enabling targeted, accelerated remediation methods by optimizing environmental conditions and introducing specific microorganisms.
  • Thermal desorption uses heat to evaporate and remove contaminants and can be applied to a variety of contaminants, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and heavy metals.
  • The late oxidation process (AOP) uses powerful oxidants to break down contaminants and can be used to treat a wide range of contaminants including pesticides, dyes and industrial chemicals.
  • Permeable Reactive Barrier (PRB) is an engineering barrier placed on the ground to intercept and treat contaminated groundwater, providing continuous treatment to ensure long-term protection of groundwater, effectively eliminating a wide range of pollutants including heavy metals, sulfates, nitrates and organic pollutants.
  • Very effective PFA desorption technology is on site and in situ, and is one of the few and proven technologies to eliminate PFA from soil and groundwater. This technology has become very relevant, especially given that almost non-existent options can safely deal with excavated soil contaminated by PFA.

Advanced remediation techniques are most effective when contamination and plume characteristics are evaluated in detail through solution-specific evaluation methods and Sensatec process laboratories. By targeting contaminants directly to the right remedy approach, we can greatly reduce the remedy schedule.

By combining these advanced technologies with Sanitech’s extensive service footprint, rapid responsiveness and procurement expertise, the partnership has the ability to deliver innovative and cost-effective solutions. Sanitech’s local knowledge and infrastructure will ensure seamless project execution, while Sensatec’s cutting-edge technology will accelerate the remediation process and improve environmental outcomes.

Comprehensive solutions for customers
Together, SaniTech and Sensatec will provide customers with a comprehensive service covering the entire project lifecycle, from initial site evaluation and feasibility studies to detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and long-term operations and maintenance. Sanitech and Sensatec will also always work closely with clients, regulators and consultants. This comprehensive approach provides a single point of contact for clients in South Africa and Namibia, ensuring clear accountability and streamlined processes to meet environmental compliance requirements.

“This partnership will leverage our comprehensive strengths to meet the urgent need for sustainable and effective remedial solutions,” said Robert Erasmus, MD, Sanitech. “By working together, we can provide our customers with a wide range of environmental solutions.”

A shared vision for the future
By combining expertise and resources, Sanitech and Sensatec are committed to providing sustainable and effective solutions to protect the environment and ensure a healthier future for generations. The long-term goal of this partnership is to ensure market leadership in soil and groundwater remediation projects in South Africa and Namibia by providing innovative, cost-effective and environmentally responsible solutions.

“This is an important milestone for Sensatec,” concluded Ylikangas. “By combining our advanced technology with SaniTech’s local expertise, we have a great location to provide innovative and cost-effective solutions to our customers.”
