Natasha Jonas v Lauren Price: Liverpudlian on ‘sliding doors’ moments which led to glory
Jonas called time in his 2014 amateur career, creating 57 wins and 26 losses. She gave birth to her daughter Mila and was glad she would never have a box again.
That quickly changed after a pioneering Irish woman and a pro with a phone call from a former GB teammate made his debut.
“I did some professional work for Katie Taylor’s debut, and Tom Stalker then called me.”
“He said there are many opportunities for a professional woman now, and asked me if I wanted to come back? I said ‘Shut up, Tom’.”
Jonas said she was “satisfied with her daily work.” Mila is over 2 years old and used to be in Nursery, where media work keeps her busy.
But the stalker’s words kept ringing. After talking to his immediate family, Jonas realized the boxing fire was still burning.
“I called two cousins, my mom and dad,” Jonas added. “I believe in their judgment and they know the benefits and disadvantages of boxing.
“They were by my side when I cried for two days after the amateurs lost to Katie.
“But they all gave me their support and said I don’t need to worry, especially in terms of babies.”
Turning Pro is a rewarding decision. In February 2022, Jonas stopped Chris Namus from becoming a lightweight world champion and has since won all five world title levels.
“If I could go back and talk to myself during the toughest moments of my life, I would say ‘chind up, kid, it all worked in the end.”
