Laureus World Sports Awards: Simone Biles, Max Verstappen, Leon Marchand, Aryna Sabalenka among nominees
Olympic champions Simone Biles, Mondo Duplantis, Leon Marchand, Faith Kipyegon, Sifan Hassan and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone are the star-studded shortlist for the Laures World Sports Awards.
American Biles, the world’s most decorated gymnast, is the three-time winner of the Women’s Award and won the Comeback Award last year.
She won three gold medals, all-around and vault in Paris, plus one silver medal, and now has 11 Olympic medals.
She joined the finalists of three athletes – McLaughlin-Levrone, 400m obstacle and 4x400m relay champion, Kipyegon in Kenya, who won the third place 15 million title, Dutch star Hassan, marathon champion.
Last year’s championship, Spanish footballer Aitana Bonmati and Belarus’s world number one tennis player Aryna Sabalenka have both completed.
On the men’s side, pipe martial artist Duplantis retained his Olympic title and broke the world record 11 times, while swimmer Marchand, the champion of four gold medals at his home competition, all of whom he had success at the Olympics last year.
Also on the shortlist is 2023 champion Max Verstappen, who won the fourth consecutive Formula 1 title, Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar, who won the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, Spanish player Carlos Alcaraz, who won the French Grand Slam and WIMBLED SLAM titles, who won the championship.
But Alcaraz’s rival Jannik Sinner, the world’s number one Nominations withdrawn last week After he received a three-month doping ban.
