Concrete steps agreed as part of border security coordination between military and security institutions in Libya
On Wednesday, February 26, representatives of military and security agencies in the east and west, including two military and police officers, responsible for border security, counter-terrorism and irregular immigration, formed a professional research center responsible for professional research on border security zones.
Members of the Joint Technical Coordination Team of Border Security (JTCT) participated in a two-day coordination meeting promoted by Unsmil in Tunisia. JTCT developed the Centre’s recommendations that analyze the risks of border security, which provides practical solutions that can be applied in the field, identifying the responsibilities and tasks of the Centre and its organizational structure.
One of the participants said the research center will help strengthen border security and combat terrorism and address irregular immigration.
In line with the requirements of the JTCT, UNSMIL has promoted field access to one of the Tunisian land border centers near the Libyan-Dunisian border to enhance experience sharing and awareness of regional cross-border security challenges.
“The establishment of the research center is part of the JTCT Joint Coordination Mechanism approved by JTCT at the Benghazi Conference from 17 to 18 December 2024,” said Ali Kilkal, of UNSMIL Security Agency Service.
Kilkal stressed that the next step will be to physically establish the Joint Border Security Centre and to start equipping them to achieve coordination, communication and information exchange of border security.
They decided to reconsider the regional coordination mechanism in southern Libya in April.
