Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Strengthens its Commitment to Democratic Process in Benin

Ambassador Ambassador Ambassador Diongue made a polite visit to Mr. Sacca Lafia, Chairman of the Election Commission of Benin Autonomous National (CENA).
The meeting at Senna headquarters in Cotonou is an opportunity for two officials to exchange New Year greetings and have a constructive dialogue on the 2026 Benin general election. The exchange highlighted the importance of active participation and collaborative efforts to ensure a free, fair and transparent election process.
The ECOWAS representative reiterated the organization’s firm commitment to support the Benin Government in preparation for the upcoming elections. He stressed Ecowas’s full commitment to accompany Benin to conduct a smooth election in an all-round way within the established legal framework. This commitment reflects the ECOWAS plan to strengthen democratic institutions and processes in all member states.
Discussions between Ambassador Diongue and President Lafia went beyond just formalities and delved into the specific challenges and opportunities related to election preparation. They explore potential areas of collaboration, including technical assistance, capacity building and logistical support, to enhance Cena’s ability to trusted and inclusive elections.
The visit reaffirmed the strong partnership between ECOWAS and the Republic of Benin, highlighting their shared commitment to democratic principles and transition to peaceful power. Through open and constructive dialogue, both sides demonstrated their commitment to promoting a stable and prosperous West Africa.
