Casey Stoney: Ex-England captain on rebuilding after San Diego sacking and becoming Canada boss
Stoney Resignation from Manchester United manager In 2021.
The NWSL club was a new franchise when she became head coach, and she led them to third place before finishing first in the first two seasons.
They entered the semifinals of the season-ending playoffs twice, who crowned the league title, but her third season didn’t move on with just three victories after 14 games.
She sees the work as a long-term project. In addition to her partner Megan and three children (Teddy, Tilly, and the youngest child Willow), she went through a painful spell-when she first moved to the United States, they eventually solved the visa issue, allowing them to reunite and set up a family residence in California.
“It took 22 months to bring them there, and we were 22 months apart, we were not a year (together) and I lost my job,” she said.
“If I’m honest, I don’t think I shouldn’t have lost my job either, so that makes it harder for our success, we just kind of dip it. It’s not even significant.
“So it’s really hard to swallow on a personal level to treat it in this way, after everything done and sacrificed and everything achieved, but it’s something that happened to my family.
“I had three young kids, and they were nine and six at the time, and they had no home. So, for me, it was unforgivable for a family.”
The day when summer vacations come and go, her children should be back in August in San Diego, so Stoney homeschooled herself.
This is what she described as “one of the hardest times of my life.”
She said: “It really makes me question whether I want to stay in the game because if the game chews you and sacrifices everything that sacrifices like this, and everything that has been achieved in a short time, and what we have achieved as a club, it really makes me question the game.
“After the announcement was announced, I quickly got the offer and whether they were right or wrong, I said no to everyone because I wanted to take some time. I needed to make sure our lives were sorted out.
“My first priority is my family (and) how we come back to San Diego.”
