England cricket: Brendon McCullum does not rule out splitting white-ball captaincy

It happened that Harry Brook appeared to be a favorite of replacement Buttler as he was appointed vice captain in January and led to Buttler’s absence from Australia last year.

But appointing him would bring problems, as Brooke is a regular on the testing side.

He either had to rest in some white ball series, or often used one of England’s methods, or took a lot of work around his test commitments.

One solution is to separate the white team captains, but England has not had three captains since Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook and Stewart Broad took on roles in the early 2010s.

“It certainly works, I don’t understand why I don’t.” Test match special podcasts.

“I feel like we’re on a stage in the cricket landscape, and that’s probably the way forward.

“The format is very different. It’s very different. More than 50 is not just an extended T20 game. It’s not, more games are closer to testing cricket and are able to do more things longer.”

Liam Livingstone and Phil Salt have both served as England captains in white cricket over the past year. Another option is to attract a player who is playing cricket in the domestic game but is currently not on the side.

England ticket inspector Sam Billings won the Oval invincible in the past one hundred years, but has not played for England since November 2022.

James Vince was successful in captaining the Hampshire team in his last international match in March 2023, while Sam Curran was captaining the Indian Premier League but was withdrawn by England last year.

Asked if England could bring such a candidate, McCallum said: “Give us a few weeks of work, digesting what has happened in the past month and a half, and then we will start planning and planning the path forward from there.”
