U.S. investigators are trying to determine how Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, died after finding the body at home in New Mexico.

Officials said Friday there was evidence that Hackman had died since February 17 – 10 days before the couple’s body was found.

A maintenance officer named Emergency Services found the body of the couple and one of their dogs at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico on Wednesday.

In a recording of the 911 phone call obtained by the BBC, emotional callers can be heard telling the dispatcher how he found the two bodies.

Hackman, 95, was found in a side room near the kitchen, while Arakawa, 65, was found on the property on the old sunset trail in Hyde Park.

Sheriff Adan Mendoza said the couple appeared to have been “dead for some time”.

The sheriff’s detective said Alakuva’s body showed signs of “decomposition” and “mummification” on his hands and feet.

Hackman’s body “resembles those on his spouse, showing obvious signs of death, similar and consistent.

A German shepherd owned by the couple was found dead in a bathroom closet near Alakava.

The detective suspected that the actor suddenly fell.

The search warrant says the situation of their deaths is considered “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation” because workers called emergency services have found the front door of the property.

“There is no sign of any struggle,” Sheriff Mendoza said. “There is no sign that anything is missing or disturbed in the house, which indicates that a crime has occurred.”
