Expert Warns Africa’s Medical Systems Could Collapse Within Years

AMREF Health Africa CEO Dr Githinji Gitahi warned that Africa’s health systems could collapse in the coming years due to the surge in chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDS). He said foreign aid has traditionally focused on infectious diseases, leaving behind NCDs such as diabetes, cancer and hypertension to increase examinations that are not subject to tissue. Therefore, NCD now has a larger share of life than ever before, with deaths in 2019 being 13% higher than in 2000. Gitahi warned that if not restricted, this could lead to a collapse of the African health system in the coming years. He called on the African government to urgently take action to address the issue and avoid the imminent humanitarian crisis.
